Games Reports

So many Games in this second quarter that we cannot cover each one in detail. Bakersfield, Ardenwood, Woodland and Loch Prado ALL went over well and we are glad we got to see so many of you there. Here are some comments on others:

We were pleased and proud to see the Parker Family taking such an integral part in the new Las Vegas Highland Games & Gathering at Freedom Park. Both Betty and Guy have taken on major jobs to see that this great Festival runs smoothly while Brianna and Bryce remain busy as drummers in the Las Vegas Pipe Band. A lasting memory will be that of Guy Parker running interference for the "One Hundred Pipers and Drummers" through the huge throng of people in the Fremont Street Experience!

It was really cold early on the morning of the Modesto Highland Games, reports Ken Hendrix, and visitors to the House of Gordon tent waited until after eleven o'clock before they began showing up. Not so for the Richard Harter Moore family, however, who were on hand for Nicolette's dance competition. She has been working hard and placing well for a little dancer so recently promoted to the Intermediate level. In her last competition as a Novice, she took two First and two Second place medals and was awarded the Novice Trophy for all her good work. That was at Ardenwood and now competition at Modesto and beyond will be a little tougher as an Intermediate. Her parents, Richard and Treasurer Pam are justly proud of her accomplishments. We wish her every success.

The Campbell Highland Games is our local South Bay event so the enthusiasm amongst the clans is always high. The weather this year was wonderful, warm (not hot) with a light breeze blowing. The weather made for a decent turnout. We had a steady stream of visitors stopping by the tent to sign in and say hello. We sold several shirts and a number of our tartan pins. The highlight of the day was the young man who was looking for a Scottish Clan to join and pick us because his best friend's name is Gordon. I figure that's as good a reason as any. Our next event will be Dunsmuir. - Anita Geleynse

Clan tent placement at the Costa Mesa Highland Games is a little mysterious but the earliest postmarks are to get the prime locations. As Clan # 7, we were pleased to have a nice shady spot and a good thing we did. Our House of Gordon tent was buzzing from early Saturday until we dragged the last of our gear off the field Sunday night. Tom and Arlene Adams did their usual fine job in seeing that everyone's needs were met and every crevice in Clan tummies was filled! I hadn't seen so much food since visiting the Gordon tent at the Games at Stone Mountain, Georgia. Those Southerners can EAT !

Saturday night brought about another of the Annual G/G (for Gordon/Graham) Cookouts at Bill & Michelle Graham's home and we filled their garden to overflowing. Scottish fiddle and guitar from Margaret Otell and Gordon Ting and pleasant pipe playing by Rodger Morris added to the ambiance. If you have not taken advantage of this primo Clan event, put it on the calendar and join us next time.

The San Diego Scottish Highland Games & Gathering continues to be a great gathering for the Gordons. We did not break any sales records but came away with a satisfied feeling of having served the membership well and received all visitors to the tent with a personal greeting. We hope that all who joined us found the tent to be comfortable and inviting. That is our goal.
